Floral Volatiles: A Promising Method to Access the Rare Nocturnal and Crepuscular Bees

چکیده

Crepuscular and/or nocturnal bees fly during the dusk, dawn or part of night. Due to their short foraging time and sampling bias toward diurnal bees, are rarely collected poorly studied. So far, they have been mostly sampled with light Malaise traps. However, synthetic chemical compounds resembling floral volatiles were recently found be a promising alternative attract these bees. By reviewing available literature collecting original data, we present information on attraction scent-baited Bees actively captured entomological nets while approaching filter papers moistened distinct compound, passively caught in bottles scent baits left all data from Neotropics. Nocturnal belonging three genera, i.e., Ptiloglossa , Megalopta Megommation attracted at least ten different mixtures thereof, identified bouquets flowers anthesis. Aromatic compounds, such as 2-phenyletanol, eugenol methyl salicylate, monoterpenoid eucalyptol most successful attracting We highlight effectiveness olfactory methods survey crepuscular using typically reported constituents, possibility record preferences each bee species specific compounds. suggest include this method apifauna surveys order improve our current knowledge diversity ecosystems.

Nocturnal bees

Are there really nocturnal bees? Surprisingly, yes. Most people, if asked about bees, think of those industrious dayactive species, like the common honeybee, that harvest sunny meadows of flowers for pollen and nectar. And such images are not misguided — most bees are indeed day active (diurnal). By sundown most bees are safely back in the nest, their day’s labours complete. But for some bees, ...

Crepuscular and nocturnal illumination and its effects on color perception by the nocturnal hawkmoth Deilephila elpenor.

Recent studies have shown that certain nocturnal insect and vertebrate species have true color vision under nocturnal illumination. Thus, their vision is potentially affected by changes in the spectral quality of twilight and nocturnal illumination, due to the presence or absence of the moon, artificial light pollution and other factors. We investigated this in the following manner. First we me...

Nocturnal Vision: Bees in the Dark

Some eyes work better in the dark than others. The apposition type of compound eye that bees and other diurnal insects possess is usually of little use after nightfall. Nevertheless some tropical sweat bees have pushed the limits of this unfavourable design so far that they can navigate using landmarks that are too dim for humans to make out.
